1st Round:

With the changes to the 2008 NFL Draft the first round was finished in 3.5 hours as compared with 6.5 in 2007. Overall, the 2008 NFL Draft was completed approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes sooner than in 2007. Even though the draft took less time, NFL teams still managed to pull off a record 34 draft weekend trades.

29. 49ers: DT Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina
30. Jets: Thru Packers: TE Dustin Keller, Purdue
31. Giants: S Kenny Phillips, Miami
Bad Pick

Comments: The first round can be highlighted by Jacksonville moving way up to reach for DE Derrick Harvey. Zero receivers being drafted in first round and the Ravens trading down and selecting small school quarterback Joe Flacco. The Falcons reached for Sam Baker, who probably would have still been there with their second round pick. The Titans would have been better off drafting Devin Thomas or James Hardy, but Johnson's 4.24 speed was seductive. The Cowboys probably should have taken RB Rashard Mendenhall over Felix Jones, Mendenhall graded out higher than Jones on probably every NFL teams draft board, but Mike Jenkins was a steal at 27. Some have criticized the Texans for drafting OT Duane Brown, (image) but he probably had the best feet from all the tackles, runs a 5.08 forty and could be a fixture at left tackle for years.

31 (62) New England Patriots: CB Wheatley, Terrence, Colorado
32 (63) New York Giants: CB Thomas, Terrell, Southern Cal Bad Pick

Comments: Boy there were some fantastic players drafted in the second round, I had QB Brian Brohm (image) rated slightly ahead of Joe Flacco. That's why so many teams continued to trade down. I have a thumbs down next to WR Donnie Avery, I like his potential, but c'mon, he was not the best receiver in this draft, maybe the fastest, but not the best. The Redskins got possibly the top two receivers in this draft in Thomas and Kelly and the Dolphins got a player in Merling that would have certainly been drafted within the top 15 picks of the 1st round if he wouldn't have suffered a late season sports hernia. The Colts reached for Mike Pollack, I don't know if he will able to play for a year or two. The Jags made up for a reach in the first round by drafting Groves here, they really focused on their pass rush. Chad Johnson might be out with the Bengals now, WR Jerome Simpson could step right in and be a major sleeper. Martellus Bennett should be a major improvement over Anthony Fasano at tight end for the Cowboys. The Giants reached for CB Terrell Thomas when the better Charles Godfrey was still on the board. The Packers got unheralded, super talented CB Patrick Lee, who was a great value here. The 49ers made a great pick in Chilo Rachal, who could step right in and start for the retired Larry Allen at guard as a rookie.

34 (97) Cincinnati Bengals: Caldwell, Andre, WR, Florida Good pick
35 (98) Atlanta Falcons: DeCoud, Thomas, FS Good pick
36 (99) Baltimore Ravens: Cousins, Oniel, OG Good pick

Comments: Wow so many talented receivers being drafted in this round. What happened to Mario Manningham, he slipped due to character issues, but has first round talent. The Chiefs absolutely stole RB Jamaal Charles, (image) who I had rated equal to Felix Jones, who was drafted in the first round. The Lions got a great running back in Kevin Smith, who led the nation in rushing in 2007 with 2,567 yards . LB Dan Connor was a great value at #74, a blue collar player,  not pretty, but he gets the job done. The Bengals got yet another fast, talented receiver in Andre Caldwell and the Cardinals got a great value in WR Early Doucet, if not for nagging injuries Doucet would have been a first rounder. Shawn Crable is a perfect fit in the Patriots defensive scheme and OLB Bruce Davis was a steal at #88, he is a perfect fit for the Steelers.

35 (134) Tennessee Titans: Keglar, Stanford, OLB, Purdue Good pick
36 (135) Green Bay Packers: Sitton, Josh, OT, Central Florida Bad Pick

Comments: RB Tashard Choice (image), was a good pick for Dallas, he is a talented player that fills a need, but the best pick in this round could be CB Justin King, if he would have came back for his senior year he likely would have been a first round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Martin Rucker is a nice looking pass catching tight end that carried a second round grade by many. The Titans finally got receiver help in Lavelle Hawkins, who was an excellent value here. My favorite player drafted in this round was Quintin Demps, not only does he fill a huge need for the Eagles, but he is talented enough to come in and play as a rookie. Staying with the Eagles, cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu won't play football for the Eagles this year while recovering from a major late season injury, but if his rehab goes well he has the talent to start at corner in 2009.

31 (166) Chargers: Marcus Thomas , RB, UTEP

Comments: The talent is starting to fall off in this round, however there will be some real value that will emerge in a year or two. CB Zack Bowman (image) could be the steal of this round, he has battled serious injuries both his junior and senior year, but came back strong and ran a 4.43 at the NFL Combine. DT Frank Okam is probably the biggest under-achiever in this draft, but if he ever makes football a priority he could be a force, however he might have trouble even making the team as a rookie. QB Erik Ainge is a steal at #162, I had him rated as 3rd round pick on my Draft Board. OG Roy Schuening is a huge value here and he should be starting this year or next. OT Carl Nicks is another great value, he is a huge (6' 4" 339 lbs) strong mauler from corn country and I had him rated as a 2nd rounder. LB Jonathan Goff (image) at #165 is a fantastic value and a great pick for the Giants. My favorite player in this round though is QB Josh Johnson, he has tons of ability, he just needs a couple years to develop.

37 (203) Eagles:  Andy Studebaker, DE, Wheaton
38 (204) Dolphins:  Lex Hilliard, FB, Montana
Haruki Nakamura39 (205) Colts:  Pierre Garcon, WR, Mount Union Good pick
40 (206) Ravens:  Haruki Nakamura, S, Cincinnati Good pick
41 (207) Bengals:  Matt Sherry, TE, Villanova

Comments:
You can definately see the talent drop off in this round more than any other. Haruki Nakamura (image) is a talented safety that could get early playing time for the Ravens. Probably the best pick from this round unless QB Brennan turns into Tony Romo, (which is possible), is NT Ahtyba Rubin (image), he is very raw, but if you need a big run stuffing nose tackle for 1st and 2nd down he will not be moved. Pierre Garcon is an excellent, speedy developmental type receiver for the Colts, he played for teeny tiny Mount Union College, so he will need a year or two to develop, but he has NFL ability. LB Geno Hayes is a great fit for the Bucs here, he doesn't measure up size and speed wise, but on the field no one has ever questioned his production. QB Andre Woodson arrives in New York, but he will have a lot of competition, the G-men signed David Carr so Woodson might have to beat out both the hefty lefty (Jared Lorenzen) and Anthony Wright to even make the team. Last but not least, RB Mike Hart to the Colts look interesting, Hart is like Geno Hayes, doesn't have the size and speed, that is why he slipped into the 6th round, but he ran for over 5,000 yards and scored 41 touchdowns for his career in the rough and tough Big 10 conference.

20 (227) Broncos: Peyton Hillis, FB, Arkansas
21 (228) Rams pick: Chamberlain, LB, Tulsa
22 (229) Titans: Cary Williams, CB, Washburn
23 (230) Eagles pick:  King Dunlap, OT, Auburn Bad Pick
24 (231) Browns pick:  Alex Hall, DE, St. Augustine's

26 (233) Seahawks:  Justin Forsett, RB, California
27 (234) Chargers:  Corey Clark, OT, TAMU
28 (235) Seahawks:  Brandon Coutu, K, Georgia
29 (236) Colts:  Jamey Richard, C, Buffalo
30 (237) Saints:  Adrian Arrington, WR, Michigan
31 (238) Buccaneers:  Cory Boyd, RB, South Carolina Good pick
32 (239) Chiefs:  Mike Merritt, TE, Central Florida
33 (240) Ravens:  Allen Patrick, RB, Oklahoma Good pick Injury concerns
34 (241) Panthers:  Geoff Schwartz, OT, Oregon
35 (242) Redskins:  Rob Jackson, DE, Kansas State
36 (243) Bears:  Joey LaRocque, LB, Oregon State Bad Pick
37 (244) Bengals:  Angelo Craig, DE, Cincinnati
38 (245) Dolphins:  Lionel Dotson, DT, Arizona
39 (246) Bengals:  Mario Urrutia, WR, Louisville Good pick
40 (247) Bears:  Kirk Barton, OT, Ohio State
41 (248) Bears:  Marcus Monk, WR, Arkansas
42 (249) Redskins:  Chris Horton, S, UCLA
43 (250) Panthers:  Mackenzy Bernadeau, OT, Bentley Good pick
44 (251) Bills:  Kennard Cox, S, Pittsburgh
45 (252) Rams:  David Vobora, LB, Idaho

Comments: The Chiefs snatched one of my favorite small school players in DE Brian Johnston, he might not replace Jared Allen as a rookie, but he has great upside and potential. Johnston was one of my "sleepers". A couple of receivers were excellent picks here, Marcus Monk and Mario Urrutia, both players are huge (6' 5" 220 lbs) and talented, and both suffered all last season with nagging injuries. If Urrutia would have returned to Louisville for his senior year he could have emerged as a very high draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. I can't believe Safety Josh Barrett slipped down this far, he was the fastest safety at the NFL Scouting Combine when he ran a 4.38 forty, it just goes to show that speed isn't everything. OT Brandon Keith, FB Peyton Hillis, WR Steve Johnson, OT Chester Adams and DE Hilee Taylor were great picks here and should all be on opening day rosters.
